Singer/song writer, Ani Difranco has a wonderful line in a song:
“us people are just poems
we’re 90% metaphor
with a leanness of meaning
approaching hyper-distillation”
i tend to agree with her. in so many ways we are just poetry, and metaphors used in different ways and for different reasons. we take our metaphorical emotions and try to come across as wise and truthful. we create imagery to match our notions of ourselves and we perform different roles to manifest what we want.
i see poetry as a nice platform for working out some of the thoughts that i am not sure how else to express. i enjoy the performance of poetry and work hard on the cadence and the feeling to each part. the title of this poetry log is not trying to be clever, or trying to shock the reader. it is my own metaphor of a way to describe what my mother has given me. and what i believe we owe each other. and what i believe patriarchy takes from other humans and from the environment around it.
course, nothing is that easy. poems aren’t about facts or “policy” for change, or anything concerning the 10% of our minds that seem to be running the show and ruining the stage. rather, this poemlog is about the 90% that you feel. the 90% that is embodied.
when we sing, create art, laugh with friends, and perform acts of random kindness and when we enjoy each other. when we dance, too, those 90% feeling moods, when the sun hits your face, and when you are devastated over the horrible things that humans can do to one another, these poems are woven from those feelings and more. and they are brought to you by me. and i was woven from my mother’s womb.
